Tempered vs Laminated Glass: Differences and When to Use Each One

Glass is a fundamental material in modern construction, but not all glasses are the same. Two of the most used types in glassware are vidrio templado y el vidrio laminado. ¿Cuál es mejor para tu proyecto? Te lo explicamos.

Tempered Glass

Tempered glass undergoes a heating process at 700°C and rapid cooling, which increases its resistance up to 5 veces más que el vidrio normal.

Characteristics

Aplicaciones ideales

  • Mamparas de baño y ducha
  • Puertas de cristal
  • Glass tables
  • Shop windows
  • Hornos y chimeneas

Laminated Glass

Laminated glass is made up of two or more sheets of glass joined by a sheet of PVB (polyvinyl butyral) that acts as a safety «glue».

Characteristics

Aplicaciones ideales

  • Barandillas de cristal
  • Lucernarios y techos
  • Suelos de cristal
  • Vidrios antirrobo
  • Parabrisas de vehículos

Comparison

Characteristic Tempering Laminated
Resistencia mecánica ★★★★★ ★★★☆☆
Seguridad post-rotura ★★★☆☆ ★★★★★
Acoustic insulation ★★☆☆☆ ★★★★☆
UV Protection ★☆☆☆☆ ★★★★★
Modificable No Yes
Price Medium High

¿Cuál elegir?

  • Elige templado para: mamparas, mesas, puertas interiores, estanterías
  • Elige laminado para: barandillas, techos, suelos, seguridad antirrobo
  • Templado + laminado para: máxima seguridad (barandillas exteriores, vidrios estructurales)

Conclusión

Both glasses are safety glass, but with different purposes. Tempered glass stands out for its mechanical and thermal resistance, while laminated glass offers maximum post-breakage safety and better acoustic insulation.

Proceso de Fabricación: Cómo se Hacen

  • Templado: The glass is heated to 620-680°C and rapidly cooled with jets of air. This process creates internal stresses that multiply its resistance by 4-5 times. Once tempered, it cannot be cut or drilled.
  • Laminado: Two or more glasses are joined with one or more layers of PVB (polyvinyl butyral) at high temperature and pressure in an autoclave. The PVB sheet retains the fragments in case of breakage.

Datos de Resistencia

Ensayo Tempered 10 mm Laminado 5+5 mm Float 10 mm
Flexural strength 120-200 MPa 40 MPa 40 MPa
Resistencia a impacto (bola 227g) Desde 1,2 m de altura Desde 0,3 m de altura Desde 0,25 m
Choque térmico 200°C differential 40°C 40°C
Seguridad ante caída No (fragmentos caen) Sí (retiene fragmentos) No

Ecological Data

Both types of safety glass contribute to the circular economy: tempered glass is recycled as cullet (crushed glass) to manufacture new glass, saving 25% of energy. Laminated glass requires a prior separation process of the PVB layer, but current technologies allow 95% of its components to be recycled.

  1. Carmen Martínez says:

We are going to put a glass door in the living room. The architect recommends laminated for safety. Is it really necessary or is tempered enough? Laminated is quite more expensive.

Hello Carmen Martínez, thank you for your comment. We are glad that you found the article useful. If you have any questions or projects in mind, we will be happy to help. Best regards, Cristalería Altea.

  2. Stefan Koch says:

For interior glass doors, laminated is safer especially with children. Tempered breaks into pieces, laminated stays together. Worth the extra cost for peace of mind.

  3. Javier Díaz says:

We have laminated doors and we are comfortable with the children. If it breaks (which has not happened), the crystals remain glued to the sheet. It is safer without a doubt.
